I think these three points are major reasons why Japan has a lot of vending machines.
We could get drinks for as little as 100 yen.
In 1967, 100 yen coins were recast and, as a result, vending machines received a boost in convenience because of the increased circulation of the new 100 yen coins.
The Hot＆Cold machine came out
We could get drinks easily when we want them without going into the shops.
Since the “Hot＆Cold machine” came out in 1974, vending machines became able to sell and dispense both hot and cold beverages at the same time.
A popular side business
Anyone who is interested can manage the vending machine and it is becoming a popular side business.
Since Japan is very safe, vending machines seldom get broken by someone.
You can enjoy a drink anytime and anywhere.
Additionally, you can easily manage the vending machine without worrying about thieves breaking into it.
Because of the low-crime risk, one might find it more attractive to try managing a vending machine. This is one of the reasons vending machine ownership has increased and is still popular today.
In the winter, it is easy buying a hot drink if you want and you can still buy a cold drink indoors even if the weather is cold outside.
Nowadays, the use of vending machines is decreasing because of the rising consumption tax which has caused prices to rise over 100 yen. Consequently, more people are using the convenience stores.
Nevertheless, I’m lazy when I am shopping at the grocery store and sometimes I forget to buy what I wanted to drink. Luckily, I like that most stores will have vending machines placed in front of the store.
Vending machines are beginning to accept e-money but there are not so many of them in more local areas like the countryside and small towns.

What are Some Interesting or Unusual Things that are Sold from Vending Machines in Japan?
Two items are “Oshiruko” and “Corn potage” which come out in the winter and are very popular in Japan.
■Oshiruko
Oshiruko is a soup made with Azuki and Mochi.
■Corn potage
Corn potage is cream soup in corn.
To avoid having the food stick to the bottom, I suggest you swirl the can around and then drink it.
